The Case

We regularly approached by friends and colleagues for help on their websites, Facebook pages, or Instagram accounts.

A lot of journalists and publishers are putting great effort in getting online and using social, but they are not achieving the desired results. It’s frustrating, especially as many of them are not big organisations that can afford to have an engineering department. So our digital agency ID Africa has had to help many configure their Instant Articles; built totally new websites for others, helped some recover hacked accounts, and train dozens on how to use many tools that can help them get better results.

They are enthusiastic about the opportunities social media brings. But not having the basic skills, or adequate support from the mostly large organisations like Facebook, Twitter, Google, and co, can prove to be frustrating. So, in 2016, while meeting with some brand journalists, We decided it was better to set up a system that periodically provides an opportunity for us to learn and share, on an ongoing basis, so we can all get the best value out of our careers and businesses.

Ideally, we should be getting the platform owners – FB, IG, Twitter and co to do the training by sending experts down here or creating an opportunity for groups to fly down to the US for a full experience, We believe it’s better to start something, even as we continue to talk to them.

Journalism is under economic threat globally, and especially in Africa, because of failing business models. Technology, which disrupted journalism in many ways, offers an opportunity to reclaim control and innovate. But we cannot deploy or exploit what we do not understand.
