On the 12th of May, 2022 the US Consulate hosted a special reception in honor of The Headies Awards, Nigeria’s biggest music awards and one of Africa’s longest-running music awards.

The Headies are the most respected and most enduring music honours event in Africa; home to one of the fastest-growing music industries in the world.

The Headies will make its first out of Africa debut in September of 2022. It will be the first time a local african awards show will hold in the United States of America.

United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard

 

Speaking at the event, the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard stated, “This year’s Headies awards will highlight the growing U.S.-Nigeria ties and the vast potential of Nigerian musicians as cultural exporters to the African continent and beyond.”

She added, “The U.S. government has long recognized the role of music in diplomacy, with its emphasis on free expression, improvisation, and democratic and collaborative teamwork. Sharing music is one of the best ways to find common ground with people on an exchange program. The appeal of music is truly universal.”

The 15th Headies will be held at COBB Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, USA on September 4, 2022 and will be attended by over 2000 guests and watched globally by over 100 million people.
