Africa Magic’s upcoming crime thriller series, Slum King has been garnering buzz for a while. Ahead of its premiere today on Africa Magic Showcase, the show had an exclusive screening party in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Friday, October 6, 2023. The event saw the gathering of Nollywood’s biggest crowd – from newbies to established names, veterans, and showrunners. Here are five fun things that happened at the event:

L-R: Olarotimi Fakunle, Executive Head of Content and West Africa Channels, Dr Busola Tejumola; Executive Producer, Slum King, Chichi Nworah; Director, Slum King, Dimeji Ajibola, and Tobi Bakre at the exclusive screening event of Slum King.

1. Guests saw the first glimpse of the show: Usually, when people attend a viewing party for a series, they can be certain that they’ve at least seen the first episode of the show. Africa Magic instead decided to switch things up, allowing guests to enjoy a medley of the first three episodes with a promise that everyone would be able to connect the dots when they start watching the show every Sunday at 8 p.m.

2. Tobi Bakre evangelized about Slum King and why it was so important: it’s one thing to be happy you have a new film coming, it’s another to be glowing with pride – which is the only way to describe Tobi’s joy at the premiere last night. He took the microphone multiple times to speak about his experience shooting, talk about the emotive aspects of the show as well as the action, and galvanize people to watch massively, with a promise that they would be hooked.

3. Everyone somehow had a great interpretation of Slum Glam: the theme for the evening was Slum Glam. This meant you had to look a little like the streets and a little glam. Somehow, everyone was able to come up with their different interpretations that wowed and also hit the mark. From King of Boys energy to assassin vibe, or agbero looks, and even hot girls fit, everyone looked fabulous! It was so much fun trying to figure out what each person’s look was channelling.

4. At least 70% of the cast were there and they took over the show: Slum King had so many cast members, and a large number of them showed up to the premiere and showed so much camaraderie, that it was difficult to find dull moments. Between teasing themselves, talking about their favourite scenes, and the barrage of social videos and pictures they took to celebrate the show, there was hardly a dull moment.

5. Africa Magic took a moment to remind everyone they have a fantastic lineup of content coming from late September till the end of the year: As Slum King premieres today, it joins an impressive lineup of content that Africa Magic promises to give fans throughout the rest of the year. Already, shows like Masquerades of Aniedo, Refuge, Chronicles, Love and Light, have launched and there is still so much more coming. As the film channel celebrates 20 years, they are looking backwards and moving forward with new content in new formats.

Slum King features stars like Tobi Bakre, Olarotimi Fakunle, Idia Aisien, Sonia Irabor, Teniola Aladese, Jidekene Achufusi, Gideon Okeke, Elvina Ibru and more.
