Media professionals enrolled in the MTN Media Innovation Programme (MIP)-3 are currently on a study trip to South Africa. The week-long journey, which began on August 30, 2024, is designed to deepen their understanding of media innovation, cultural diplomacy and strengthen the ties between Nigeria and South Africa.
Over the past months, the MIP fellows have immersed themselves in eye-opening training sessions, developing their skills and gaining in-depth knowledge of their roles in this digital age and the world of opportunities open to them.
According to MTN Nigeria CEO, Karl Toriola, the trip to South Africa will be an educational experience for the cohort, and a step towards strengthening the relationship between Nigeria and South Africa. “We have curated insightful sessions with some brilliant minds in South Africa. Fellows will be interacting with an ecosystem of innovators, thought-leaders and change-makers to build meaningful connections to propel growth and impact.”
The cohort will be engaged in enlightening sessions at the MTN Innovation Centre with company executives, including MTN Group CEO, Ralph Mupita, as they learn more about the significance of the Media Innovation Programme and MTN’s quest towards Pan-Africanism. Former president of the Republic of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki will also be hosting the fellows to discuss “Africa’s Indispensable Bilateral Relations (South Africa & Nigeria)”.
The media practitioners are set to discover their importance as cultural diplomats and the roles the media plays in promoting African unity, as they visit the South African Institute of International Affairs. The fellows will also learn from seasoned professionals at the University of Johannesburg, gaining insight into opportunities available to them in the digital era and the ever-evolving media landscape.
Beyond the series of impactful training and thought-provoking discussions, the MIP-3 fellows will have the opportunity to explore notable locations, including the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and the headquarters of leading entertainment company, Multichoice.
A highlight from the trip will be the round table discussion with the Deputy President, Republic of South Africa, Paul Mashatile. This engagement will offer the fellows an opportunity to learn from a seasoned leader and also share their perspectives.
The South Africa experience will undoubtedly shape the professional journeys of the MIP-3 fellows, leaving them with a newfound appreciation for cultural exchange and a deeper understanding of Africa’s interconnectedness.
